DOHA, Qatar : Singapore sailing struck two gold medals in the men's and women's 420 classes yesterday, two days before the official competition ends here at the 15th Asian Games in Doha.

Singapore's women's 420 pairing of Sarah Tan and Lim Tze Ting struck gold with two races to spare, while the men's 420 team of Sherman Cheng and Justin Liu are also in an unassailable position after Sunday's round of races.

Tan, skipper of the 420 women's team, had picked up a bronze at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan in the Optimist class.

She was ecstatic last night and said: "It is amazing. I won a bronze in 2002 and now I have won gold. This is a great achievement for me. I am so happy."

SingaporeSailing president Low Teo Ping was a mixture of delight and relief, as he contemplated the double-gold feat.

Low, also the Singapore Rugby Union president, had predicted that the sailors would deliver at least two gold medals in Doha and he paid tribute to a great team effort.

He said: "I have known the 420 women's team of Sarah and Tze Ting for 10 years now. All their hard work has paid off.

"They have done very well because of the whole management team and the support team which is in place.

"But most of all, they have struck gold because they are very dedicated. That's the key to any success story."

Singapore's sailors are also leading in the Laser men and in the Laser 4.7 Open classes after yesterday's races.

Laser sailor Maximilian Soh heads the class with 19 points, ahead of his nearest challenger from Japan Yoichi Iijima, who has 24 points after 10 races.

Soh is very confident going into the final two races. "I am confident and I'll just do my best and hope everything goes well," said the 18-year-old student.

"I'll just do what I have been doing all week and stick to my basics.

"I am just watching my two main rivals from Japan and South Korea.

"It is getting very exciting and I am fully focused on each race at a time."

Singapore's Laser 4.7 Open sailor Colin Cheng, who was only a reserve in the 2002 Busan Asian Games, is eight points ahead of his nearest challenger, Qatar's Waleed Al Sharshani.

Singapore's Optimist woman sailor Griselda Khng kept herself in the hunt for a medal after finishing in first and second spot, respectively, in her two races yesterday.

The Singapore Sports School student is lying second overall, seven points behind Malaysia's Rufina Tan.

Apart from Khng, the 470 men's team of Terence Koh and Xu Yuan Zhen, the 470 women's pairing of Elizabeth Tan and Toh Liying and the Hobie 16 crew of Chung Pei Quan and Melcolm Huang are all also lying in second spot.

As the remaining battles reach a peak, sailing team manager Andrew Sanders said: "There's still a few days to go but the two golds are a real shot in the arm. We set out for two golds here and we have got them. Now it is our duty to help push the rest of the team as high up as possible."

The sailing competition continues today and the final races of the Optimist (men and women), Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 Open are scheduled for tomorrow.
